What is the final product made of?

100 % re-usable frame made of 100 % recyclable natural Anodised aluminium – glass ( 100 % recyclable ) – and 3form, recycled resin with natural materials imbedded – illumination is done with LED , extremely low energy consuming light. Everything is made locally in Cape Town ( except 3 form , made in USA)

Describe the transport journey of the parts or "ingredients." of the product to you.

Our aluminium extrusions are delivered from Epping to us by truck – the excess of the production ( of cuts ) are captured and transported back to the factory to be recycled. Transport from our factory in montague gardens to CTICC was with a bakkie and trailer as all our products are Light weight.

What is the life of the product?

Anodized aluminium and glass have an extremely long life – the Kubik frames can be de mounted and re-configured to new products , new walls, and are thus re-usable. At the end of their life ( 50 years ) , they are 100 % re-cycled – melted to form new extrusions.

Is the final product recyclable?

Yes – 100 %

If it is, will the new recycled product have a low carbon footprint?

Describe the human/environmentally friendly/sustainable attributes of the product.

The use of aluminium requires a minimum of maintenance and cleaning products – as the product doesn’t deteriorate , it has an extremely long life span, after that , it is 100 % recyclable . so the impact is minimal.

Does the product contain any VOC’s? Etc., Any regulations and standards?

No – no VOC’s

Do your company or factory have any energy saving programmes running at the moment?

We are presently relocating – plans are to run a energy saving programm in our new factory as we will become part of ECO SPECIFIER

Does your company or factory have any water saving programmes in place.

No, not yet

Do your company have any future plans on improving the sustainability and environmentally friendly quality of the products?

We already have a program running, but yes, as we plan to become member of Ecospecifier, we will be at the forefront of South African manufacturers in this regard.

Design Afrika was established in 1995 in Cape Town, South Africa, by Binky Newman, an African by birth.

Binky travels to remote areas throughout Afrika to collect finely made contemporary craft and traditional functional art.

Design Afrika and Binky work with community-based projects and individuals, often in very remote villages. We advise on market trends, development of product lines and the most economical way to bring handicrafts to the market.

Binky is fiercely determined to show that Africa is not only a place of hardship. It is also filled with beauty – beautiful scenery, beautiful people, beautiful music, beautiful craft and beautiful art. By promoting well-made reasonably priced, functional and artistic craft, Design Afrika aims to contribute to the emergence of Africa as a source of inspiration and spiritual strength.

Girly Cabinet

Girly, the elegant and charming little cocktail cabinet, created for NOK by Gilles Pretorius, has got more to it than just its beauty. The NOK team promotes sustainability with the use of environmentally friendly materials, waste management and local labour and skills development. Considering this mission Girly can truly be seen as a green product.

Mao bamboo, the laminate sheet Girly is constructed from, grows in commercially managed forests using sustainable practices. After a rapid four year harvest cycle the mature stems are processed while the rest of the plant is left to regenerate. Compared to hardwoods and laminates, bamboo processing leaves a considerably smaller carbon footprint.

Computer numerical control (CNC) routing, the manufacturing process used, reduces waste of material in that the material usage is mathematically optimised. CNC Routdesign, a company that forms part of the NOK collaboration, gave Gilles the opportunity to develop his skills in designing for the routing process as well as providing him with a platform to realise his career as a designer in South Africa.

Girly is his first commercial product for NOK and has thus far received much positive critique from the public.

Glass pods

Delicate bubbles of glass, each filled with a seed or leaf. – The little hole at the top allows you to fill them with water, enabling you to use them for fresh flowers as well. They are made in Johannesburg making them a proudly South African product.

Clementina cups

We exhibited two beautiful cups from Clementina. I have watched many an admirer or tourist take hours to choose the two cups that they are definitely taking home. They are all so unique that the choice is nearly impossible, therefore one will also never do!

About the Artist: Clementina van der Walt

Excerpt from Contemporary Ceramics in South Africa
Text: Wilma Cruise
Struik Publishers (Pty.)Ltd. 1991

Clementina van der Walt is a potter who has successfully walked the tightrope over the abyss of the art versus production conflict. On the one hand, she has had to deal with commercialism and its potential artistic compromises, and on the other, with the poverty of the artist who chooses to struggle with esoteric and frequently unmarketable concepts.

She has managed this by developing two different kinds of work, namely commercial ‘production line’ vessels and ‘contemporary’ vessels. With the first she makes a living; with the second, she explores ideas. Neither commercial concerns nor artistic values are compromised, and in fact the same sensibility that guides her exploratory work with the vessel as metaphor informs the designs with which she ‘clobbers’ white commercial tableware. The two enterprises exist side by side;one sustains the other.

Both her commercial tableware and her expressive vessels bear her distinctive on-glazes, marks and images. Van der Walt says that she wanted to create ‘charming, colourful, exciting dinnerware’.The desire to create these objects arose from her sense that pots as art tend to become remote from everyday life.

Clinton Friedman botanical prints

We featured 3 prints from Clinton’s Botanical collection (classic botanical; whole plants) We chose the Aloe’s for there unique architectural features and their ability to survive harsh conditions. Although photography is not exactly a “green” industry, Clinton’s Botanical photography certainly reminds us of just how extraordinary our planted is and might spur us on to take steps in preserving the earth’s biodiversity

About the Artist: Clinton Friedman

 Profile Excerpt from www.clintonfriedman.com

Always up for a creative challenge, whatever the brief- whatever the location. Clinton will not only deliver with accuracy but he will show you something in a way you don’t see or expect. Its evident in all that he does. Clintons work is subtle, sincere and full of intensity. Whatever the subject, he thinks about it, feels it passionately – then does it beautifully. Clinton not only works on local projects across South Africa, but has also had the opportunity to shot internationally in Miami Florida, Atlanta, New York, London, India and Mozambique.

What is the final product made of?

The final product is made from stained glass and is mounted on Wedi board, a new state of the art innovation used in the construction industry. It is ideal for mosaic as it is strong, lightweight and completely waterproof.

The final product was made in my studio overlooking some of the Cape’s most scenic winelands and a game farm. The relaxing atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings simulate creativity and the only sounds around are birds chirping and the tinkering of glass mobiles stirring in the breeze. The various types of glass are imported from Europe and America and each piece is individually selected for its colour, texture and opacity.

Describe the transport journey of the parts or ‘ingredients’ of the product to you.

The glass is shipped in crates direct to our factory in Cape Town where it is cut and most of it redistributed to other artists via retail outlets.

Describe the final product’s transport journey from the factory to the CTICC and Decorex.

The piece was lovingly wrapped in brown paper and transported in my X5 to the Lisa King gallery and delivered in person.

What is the life of the product?

It will outlast myself and my children. And, if treated properly, their children and their children too. We have paintings from a few hundred years ago and mosaics from more than 1000 ago. This may not last as long, but in it’s current form, it will last quite a vast number of years.

Does your company or factory have any water saving programs in place.

All our work is done by hand and mostly using natural light.

Does your company have any future plans on improving the sustainability and environmentally friendly quality of the products?

The product is made using ancient techniques and the glass and Wedi manufacture we have no control over.

Describe your companies’ employee policies and any training or education programs you have in place.

Our main studio in Cape Town employ 3 staff members who have been trained by myself in mosaic. It is an ongoing process. There are no formal training programs for mosaic artists in this country. It is an in house thing.

Are you involved in any community upliftment, charities or social development programs?

We have tendered for some community projects and would love to get involved in community upliftment projects, but it is difficult to obtain sponsorship from local manufacturers as they would rather dump defective product than donate it to a worthy cause.

A bit more about Hemp

Hemp is used for a wide variety of purposes, including the manufacture of cordage of varying tensile strength, clothing, and nutritional products. The bast fibers can be used in 100% hemp products, but are commonly blended with other organic fibres such as flax, cotton or silk, for apparel and furnishings, most commonly at a 55%/45% hemp/cotton blend. The inner two fibers of hemp are more woody, and are more often used in non-woven items and other industrial applications, such as mulch, animal bedding and litter. The oil from the fruits ("seeds") dries on exposure to air (similar to linseed oil) and is sometimes used in the manufacture of oil-based paints, in creams as a moisturising agent, for cooking, and in plastics. Hemp seeds have been used in bird seed mix.
